Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Breville JE900 Juice Fountain Professional Juice ExtractorCustomer Review: Frighteningly powerful juicer Summary: 5 Stars
Several years ago I was in the market for a new juicer. I had gotten really tired of my old Black & Decker. It was a royal pain in the butt to use and clean. It had an odd shape and pitiful 2 cup (~425ml) juice capacity. Since I was buying a new one, I thought I might as well do it right and pony up for a higher-end model that would get more mileage.
I had never heard of Breville before (they're Australian), but all the positive reviews convinced me. Aside from the housing, this product does not disappoint. The paint job makes it look like metal, but it's plastic. Setup is very easy. Everything aligns with notches, with spring-loaded mechanisms on the locking arm and a grinding basket that snap in place with ball bearings. True to the description, it fits whole apples and is frighteningly powerful. The motor sounds like a jet engine and it forcibly ejects juice and pulp out opposite directions of the machine. Uncut fruits and vegetables can go in the thing, saving time and effort. I juice whole carrots, celery stalks, apples, pears, beets, and tomatoes without having to cut them.
Because it spins a lot faster than other juicer, it extracts a lot more juice... and very quickly like a centrifuge. The liquid doesn't just trickle out by gravity like most juicers I've use. It is forcefully expelled, so be sure the collection pitcher is under the spout the moment your food contacts the blade. The juice flows out very fast in a steady stream. I don't much like the amount of froth that whips up during the extraction process, but it can be skimmed off. (So as not to waste anything, I scoop it out with a spoon and eat/drink it).
The machine works best if the plunger is slowly pushed down, not forced in. I can only imagine that some of the problems experienced by other reviewers is due to improper use. Proper technique is explained in the manual. The ejected pulp is dryer (but it depends on the fruits or vegetables being juiced of course). With my old B&D, I'd scoop out the pulp and run it through the machine 2 or 3 more times and still get juice. With this Breville, doing so doesn't yield much more. What to do with all that pulp? I sometimes mix a spoon of the it back into the juice to get some of the lost fiber, but most times I just empty the pulp bucket into the compost bin. The back of the manual has recipes for using the spent fibers, like meatloaf and other food ideas.
Cleaning is very easy with a sponge and some warm water. I clean the mesh part with a toothbrush. Cleaning should be done soon after use so the pulp doesn't harden and become even harder to remove.
A few design innovations are worth mentioning, since this machine is designed for use in food service: the toggle switch that is easy to flip, with fingers, elbows, or whatever body part you have free. The ring-pull plug is the first I've seen on an appliance. It makes unplugging very easy, especially if your hands are slippery, or if there's an emergency.
Despite what some reviewers claim about high-velocity juicers "killing" enzymes, this is just bad science. Enzymes are not alive to begin with (they are proteins), so they cannot be killed. They can be destroyed with heat, but not killed. Another claim is that high RPM juicers heat your juice, destroying nutrients. This is also baloney. I have yet to create hot juice with this machine. The food contacts the blade for no more than a few seconds before it is violently pulped and flung against the mesh walls and extracted. Any heat generated from the friction would be in fractions of a degree.
With this juicer, you and your family can have fresh, nourishing juice that is healthier and cheaper than what you can buy at the supermarket. A very good machine that, with proper care and use, should last for years.
